It’s not everyday that we get to witness such an unbelievable example of community spirit and support.
Matt and Bec met in 2011 and shared a very special connection; they were both going through a journey with Cancer. With the mounting medical costs it seemed there was no chance they would ever afford to get married, but then came along the thoughtful and kind hearted hairdresser, Megy Lamberton.
Thanks to Megy, and an extremely generous group of over 40 Gold Coast wedding suppliers, Matt and Bec’s dream to get married came true. Everything from the food to the shoes and flowers were donated, creating a DIY wedding spectacular like no other.
It was such a huge privilege to be a part of Matt and Bec’s special day, and experience the generosity and kindness radiating from our local Gold Coast Community. What an amazing team!
Here’s the story on the Today Show with Sylvia Jeffreys.
Congratulations Matt and Bec!
Tell us about the moment you and your partner first met? Matt & I first met in person back in 2011, after a unique start. I went to see a psychic medium early that year after losing a close friend to leukaemia. She went through cancer the same time as me and we went through a lot of treatments at similar times. The medium was also a dental nurse & looked after Matt while he was getting all his teeth capped. He needed this due to all the vomiting during chemotherapy.
She introduced us to each other as we’d both mentioned how hard it was to meet other young people our age going through this journey and who understood. We both met, not expecting anything more than friendship but that changed fairly quickly as we hit it off and it soon became clear that we were meant to be together. We later found out from this medium that we’d been together in a previous life & were soul mates.
How did your beautiful love story become so well known in Australia? A friend of mine, tagged me in a post on Facebook. It was about a gorgeous & generous hair stylist on the Gold Coast named Megy, she had started her own business (The Style Room) & had amazing success & wanted to give back and ‘pay it forward’ to a bride-to-be who for whatever the reason; was going through a tough time. After she posted this offer on Facebook, other small Gold Coast businesses jumped on board and it snowballed into a free wedding. The Today Show saw this online and wanted to share the story & then this post appeared. I was tagged in the comments and told to enter as we couldn’t afford to get married. I’d been applying for lots of wedding competitions. My only thought was “you’ve got to be in it, to win it”. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined what happened next.
What was your favourite part of your wedding? My favourite part of our wedding would have to be: having all our loved ones in the one place, just for us. The fact that everyone travelled to Queensland to see us get married, just blew us away. We never expected almost all the people we invited to accept as it would cost a lot of money. Yet they accepted almost straight away! On the day, there was this amazing feeling of pure love and happiness. I’ve never felt something like that before. It’s so hard to describe but all of our guests agreed that they could feel it too. Being surrounded by that & marrying the love of my life, is something I’ll never forget. It was truly magical! Getting married wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the extremely generous suppliers who donated their time, talents, services and money, to help make our dream a reality. We can’t thank each and every one of these amazing people enough!
